Science Week

4th & 5th Class look at a couple of practical experiments as part of Science Week 2019.

Experiment 1: The pupils looked at how a simple Carbon Dioxide fire extinguisher works.

Firstly, baking soda was added to vinegar in a jug. This created a reaction where carbon dioxide was produced. Due to the fact that carbon dioxide is more dense than air, the carbon dioxide stayed in the jug for the most part (although it was not visible).

Pupils where then able to ‘pour’ the carbon dioxide onto a candle and extinguish the flame.

Experiment 2: Hot Water vs Cold Water

In experiment 2 the children observed how hot water is less dense than cold water. This was demonstrated by placing a glass of hot water on top of a glass of cold water. The hot water (which had green food colouring in it) stayed on top of the cold water (which was blue). To further prove the theory, we repeated the steps of the experiment but this time placed the cold on top of the hot water. In this instance, the cold water rushed downwards and mixed with the hot as the hot itself would have initially have been trying to rise.

Munster Minor Hurling Cup in Herbertstown

Limerick Minor goalkeeper Jack Franklin was a guest of the school today and he brought the Munster Minor hurling cup to our after-school training.

Jack, who is currently the goalkeeper for John the Baptist’s Harty Cup team, gave some great tips to the children about the importance of practising the skills of the game at home.

The cup has been awarded to the Munster Minor hurling champions since the 1940s and one victory of note was that of the 1958 Limerick team who featured Herbertstown man JJ Bresnihan in the full line. Who knows, perhaps in a few years time one of the pupils present to meet Jack today might be picking up the cup themselves.

South Football Finals

Herbertstown NS clinch Roinn B Girls title for the first time but fall just short in Roinn A Boys football decider.

The South Limerick Cumann na mBunscol football finals (sponsored by Allianz) took place today in Martinstown and both our boys and girls were in action.

Boys Roinn A Final

The boys were first up in a very close contest with Croom NS. Croom got the better of the early stages and were a few points ahead until a point from Callum and a goal from Christian brought us level at the break.

A Croom point was quickly cancelled out by Riain for the boys in maroon on the resumption of play and heading towards the last few minutes a great point by our inside forward Callum seemed to have Herbertstown headed towards a victory. In the final moments however a Croom move along the endline finished with a goal and that pushed them 2 points in front.

Despite the best efforts of our boys to produce a reply we just ran out of time with Croom NS winning on a scoreline of Croom NS 1.05 Herbertstown NS 1.03.

Girls Roinn B Final

In the second game the Herbertstown girls took on neighbours Hospital NS. The initial stages of this game were keenly contested before a point from Ciara and a goal from Aoibhinn settled the Herbertstown team. 2 more goals from Aoibhinn sent Herbertstown into the break with a commanding lead.

The second half saw Herbertstown continue to press for scores with Aoibhinn, Ciara and Lucy getting on the scoresheet. Despite some excellent play from the Hospital team the Herbertstown girls in defence were able to hold out and the final score was Herbertstown NS 6.05 Hospital NS 0.00

News from the Infant Classroom

As Winter arrives the nature table will soon be cleared away from the Infant Classroom but have a look at all the interesting items which were found by the pupils during Autumn.

There were also some excellent pieces of art on display in the corridor beside the Infant Classroom ahead of Halloween!

Finals Await for Herbertstown Footballers

Boys and girls through to South football deciders.

Both our boys and girls football teams were in action today in Martinstown in the Cumann na mBunscol blitzes which had been delayed by poor weather in recent weeks.

The girls were first up and they had three games. Wins over Kilfinane NS and Athlacca NS guaranteed the girls a place in at least the South Roinn B final before they played Knockainey NS in the final group game. A last minute goal gave Knockainey the victory by a single point.

With the girls fixtures completed the boys took to the field and produced two stellar displays against Kilfinane NS and Knockainey NS to top their group and secure passage to the Roinn A decider.

Well done to everyone involved. The boys and girls will return to the training field on Wednesday after school to prepare for the South Finals which will be played when we return from the mid term break.
