Olympian Sarah Lavin Visits Herbertstown NS
Limerick hurdler Sarah Lavin visited the school on Friday as part of the Dare to Believe Schools Programme.
Sarah met with all the pupils in the school for a brief assembly. Our school’s musicians, who have been diligently preparing for occasions such as this with Ms Barry, greeted Sarah with a lovely piece of music.
Next the children looked at some photos and videos of Sarah in action and the children from Infants to 5th got to ask her some questions.
Following this Sarah moved to the sixth class room to speak to the senior class. The sixth class pupils had been preparing for weeks ahead of the visit, learning about the Olympics and Paralympics, as well as the Olympic values – Respect & Equality, Healthy Mind & Body, Joy of Effort and Striving for Excellence. Their hard work was evident through their interactions with Sarah and their knowledge of her career.
Sarah herself gave a fantastic presentation to the class about how she got to where she is as an athlete, about what her training regime involves and how she believed in all the possibilities ahead for the boys and girls, given that she was once in a classroom the same as them and how amazingly, she only took up hurdling when she was 15 years old.
It was a wonderful day for the sixth class and no doubt a memorable one too for all the boys and girls who got to see Sarah at the assembly.
Football Coaching
Gearóid Balfry of the Munster Ladies Football Association was a visitor to the school on Tuesday and he provided coaching for all classes in the school.
We were very lucky with the weather and everyone got an opportunity to get outside and enjoy plenty of fun games based on developing agility and also getting more comfortable with the football.
Thanks very much to Gearóid for the visit and we hope to have him back again during Active School Week.
Hospital/Herbertstown GAA Continue Support of School
We had a special visit from John Collins and Brian Mulcahy of Hospital/Herbertstown Bord na n-Óg on Tuesday.
They made a donation of footballs to the school which we were very grateful for.
Credit Union Art Competition
Some fantastic artwork is headed to Caherconlish as the pupils have a great number of entries for the Credit Union Art Competition.
Well done to everyone who took part.
More Wonderful Art
All classes have produced some wonderful artwork during the month of September.
Much of this is on display around the school while some other superb pieces are being entered in the Credit Union Art Competition.
A Word For Everyone in Ireland
The boys and girls from 1st class to 6th class have been set a target of reading a word for everyone in Ireland.
They will achieve this target by reading books which are on the Accelerated Reader system and then passing a quiz on one of the school iPads. So far, the children have read almost 1.5 million words!
The whole school will get a night free of homework when the target of 5.123 million words read is reached.
Colourful Corridors
Just over a week since we returned and the school’s corridors are already filling up with some lovely colourful displays.

Green Flag – Biodiversity
Huge congratulations to the boys and girls across the school who have achieved a fifth Green Flag for Biodiversity!
Speared headed by the Green Schools Committee and Mrs Murphy, there has been fantastic work over the course of two years into the areas around biodiversity, as well as the previous elements of the Green Flag process.
The following speech was proudly read by members of the Green Schools Committee at the flag raising ceremony today.
We are the Green Schools Committee and we are delighted to be raising our 5th Green Flag for Biodiversity! We’ve been working hard as a school to get this flag and we appreciate all the work everyone has put in. We’d like to say a big, special thank you to all our sub-committee members: the Litter Legion, the Switch-off Squad, the Water Wardens, the Travel Team, the Bio-D Bunch, Ms, Murphy, Breda, Louise and Niall for all your hard work too!
Since we began our Green Schools Adventure years ago, we have put recycling bins in our classrooms, raised awareness with signs everywhere, done lots of litter picking, installed Barry our Water Barrell, gone for lots WOW walks, installed a bicycle rack, planted trees and bulbs, improved our garden with a bug hotel and bird feeder and have had many fun Action Days to show how much we care about our planet!
Biodiversity is so important for our planet and our well-being. From the smallest seed to the largest tree. From the tiniest insect to us humans, we all depend on each other, so it’s a great honour to raise this flag now! Thanks again to all the staff and pupils for all the work you have put in over the past 2 years especially when Covid made it so hard to come together. Please give a big bualadh bos for our brand new Biodiversity Green Flag!
