The pupils of 4th & 5th class had great fun investigating friction using matchbox cars.
The children used a ramp to launch the car and measured the distance it travelled on different surfaces. They also explored the classroom to look for textures which were rough or smooth.
A big thank you to 5th and 6th class children for their carol singing in the Crescent Shopping Centre on Tuesday. This event raised €531.50 for the school.
Congratulations to our Star Award winners for November! One pupil from each classroom was selected by their class teacher and the award winners were presented with certificates at today’s assembly. They were also given a night off homework for their efforts!
An extra award, decided on by Ms O’Dwyer and Mrs. Brosnan, is presented to pupils for a particular act of kindness or to pupils who have completed an exemplary piece of work in school. Well done to the latest recipient of this award.
Mrs Heelan’s 5th & 6th class create fantastic cribs in time for Christmas.
The pupils in Mrs Heelan’s classroom have created some excellent cribs at home and this week the other pupils in the school got an opportunity to have a look at them. It was clear that a huge effort went into each crib at home!
The members of local Men’s Shed also called in to view the work.
HNS recently received news that the late Thomas
McCarthy left the school €5000 in his will. Thomas, originally from Cahercorney,
attended Herbertstown NS and his grand niece and grand nephew are currently
attending. The money has been added to the Playground Enhancement Fund (Pedal
to the Peak fundraising etc). We are extremely grateful for this bequest and
will ensure it is put to good, long term use. The family have been contacted to
express our gratitude.
HNS successfully secured extra funding for the
classroom extension, increasing the grant to reflect the increase in Building
Costs since the original approval and also to allow for circulation areas. The
project is currently in the design stage, with a view to sending plans to the
Department of Education & Skills for approval early in the new year.
The BOM has established a sub committee to lead
the design and implementation of enhancements to the school yard and playground
areas. Members are currently researching alternative surfaces and securing
quotations with a view to finalising plans and proceeding in the new year.
The new BOM is now in
place for the term 01-12-19 50 30-11-2023

Over 40 players in total were present at the event and there were some excellent games played on the ‘One Wall’ courts in Hospital.
We had 2 pupils taking part for the first time, 1 playing in his second blitz for the school and 3 players playing in their third blitz.
2 Herbertstown N.S. pupils met in the U13 B decider and provided a top class game for those who were watching on. Another one of our boys finished runner up in the U11 A competiton.
Well done to all our pupils who once again represented our school with distinction.
